IF the Earth is the only place in the Universe that life exists, then we need to get a better understanding of how our planet works, what is unusual or unique about it, and how this may have impacted on the development of life. What are the geological processes that drive the development of our planet? How do they affect humans and other animals (and how do humans influence them)? How can we estimate the ages of stars, planets and geological events?

This term we will look at volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis - what causes them and what science-based responses have been developed to minimise the risk to us from them in Canterbury. We will also gain a deeper appreciation of geological time and how scientists infer the age of events from the distant past.

There will be additional ongoing independent study for the Level 3 externals.

Assessment opportunities:

Level 1 - Internal report AS91920

Level 2 - Internal report AS91189; External exam AS91191;

Level 3 - Internal report AS91412; (External exams AS91413 + AS91414)
