This class is designed for YEAR 7 & 8 ākonga with an interest in art and developing their skills in painting, AND WHO HAVE NOT DONE THIS CLASS BEFORE.

Course Overview:

This art class is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in painting while exploring various techniques and fundamental visual elements. Through a combination of theory, hands-on practice, and constructive feedback, students will develop their skills in colour mixing, composition, drawing, and arranging visual elements such as line, shape, colour, value, texture, form, and space. 

Learning Objectives:

Acquire an understanding of painting techniques, materials, and tools.

Master the art of colour mixing to create harmonious and dynamic compositions.

Develop skills in composing compelling visual narratives through effective use of line, shape, colour, value, texture, form, and space.

Strengthen drawing abilities as a foundation for successful paintings.

Explore and experiment with various painting styles and approaches to develop a personal artistic voice.

Course Structure:

Familiarization with different types of paint, brushes, and surfaces.

Exploring basic techniques such as blending, glazing, wet-on-wet, and dry brush.

Understanding the colour wheel and colour harmonies.

Practicing colour mixing exercises to achieve desired hues, shades, and tones.

Studying the principles of composition and their application in painting.

Experimenting with different arrangements of visual elements to create balance, rhythm, and focal points.

Exploring Visual Elements: Line, Shape, Colour, Value, Texture, Form, and Space:

You can expect ongoing constructive feedback during the course and be doing your own evaluation of completed artworks. There will be opportunities for self-reflection and peer feedback to foster a supportive learning environment.
