Description

In this course, we start by identifying current environmental issues of concern to us.  Think climate change, deforestation, loss of habitat, waste, pollution... We then look at the causes of these issues.  In particular, how our world views influence the way we interact with the environment around us. What are values? Whose values and behaviours dominate?  Whose are hidden? How have our ancestors lived in harmony with the natural world?

We will choose some case studies from here and overseas to help us understand how these different world views can clash.   For example, the Dakota Pipeline, or the Mauna Kea observatories, Manukau Harbour, Manapouri or Ihumatao.  In our final couple of weeks, you will have an opportunity to plan and create a short film with an environmental message.

Notes:

  • You will need a device for research and something to make notes on.  You will need a device to film on - a phone will do.   If you don't have a computer or chrome book, make sure you get a pass to borrow a school one.
  • Expect an LA led course with opportunities to research into case studies of your choice.
  • Expect to practise literacy skills such as reading, writing, and presentation.
  • Expect to debate and make a short film.
