Exploring Traditional Māori Kai

In this class, we’ll delve into the heart of Māori tradition. Discover traditional Māori cooking methods, immerse yourself in the art of sourcing kai from local landscapes, and unravel the connections between the whenua and kai in your own backyard, Ōtautahi.

Throughout the course, you'll explore the practice of foraging for native herbs, gaining an understanding of their cultural significance and culinary applications. This class isn't just about cooking; it's about forging a connection with the land and its bounty.

As we navigate the culinary landscape, ākonga will learn about the holistic relationship between Māori communities and their kai sources. This course is a celebration of the unique bond between whenua, whānau, and traditional practices.

At the end of the term, ākonga will apply their newfound knowledge in a hands-on experience—crafting and participating in a traditional Hangi.
