Drama Curriculum Level 6

Course aims / learning outcomes

• Drama equips us with the skills we need to make a success of ourselves.

  The NCEA level 1 class in drama will be devoted to the practical development of the basic components of performance drama. Over the course of the year, we will explore, practice and refine the use of techniques, conventions and elements. We will use a variety of performance tasks to achieve this. This class will help with building self-confidence, speaking in public, and developing manaakitanga. All assessments are live performances with supporting evidence. Coming to drama with a positive attitude and self-discipline is essential if you are to get the most out of what this course has to offer.  As the tasks and assessments are group tasks it is essential that you regularly attend classes.  

Course content

• Term 1 will explore the function of Theatre Aotearoa with a thorough investigation of the practical use of drama techniques, elements, conventions and technologies. We will use extracts from a New Zealand script to explore how drama can heal, educate, entertain, or transform society. 
• Term 2 will build on the techniques work of term 1 as we use a different script to develop credible characters, relationships and situations in performance.
• In term 3 the focus will be on using creative strategies to create a drama. It will be a collaborative process involving ways of working that promote whanaungatanga, where meaning in performance is created. You will show that you can contribute to an effective and compassionate group culture as you work in groups to devise your own dramatic performance pieces. 

Assessment statement

• This course offers 2 internally assessed standards as well as 1 external exam for a total of 15 credits at Level 1 .
• Every assessment in this subject area is a performance, which will be recorded for assessment and moderation purposes. The performances are supported with written reflections.
• There are no reassessment opportunities in this subject.

Authenticity

•  Assignments that take place over time will be produced in an online system such as Google Docs. Learning Advisors will monitor student work by accessing document history. A portion of work will need to be completed during class time under Learning Advisor supervision. Clear deadlines will be set at the commencement of each unit of work.

Appeal Procedures

• Students have the right to appeal the mark they have been awarded. If a student wishes to appeal a grade, they should initially talk to the subject learning advisor about the marking process immediately after the marked assessment task is shown to them. If still dissatisfied the student should make an appointment and discuss grades with the Principal’s Nominee who will check that the correct procedures have been followed as outlined in the school and subject policies taking into account any special circumstances.
