Course aims / learning outcomes

• Working with Drama not only involves using voices and bodies but also emotions, creativity and courage. It requires trust, sensitivity and loyalty. Drama builds communication, listening and cooperation skills. It helps us to understand how to work with other people and the importance of working together.
• This NCEA level 2/3 course will be devoted to the ongoing practical development of the basic components of performance drama. Over the course of the year, we will explore, practice and refine the use of techniques, conventions and elements. We will use a variety of performance tasks to achieve this. All assessments are live performances with supporting evidence. Coming to drama with a positive attitude and self-discipline is essential if you are to get the most out of what this course has to offer.  As the tasks and assessments are group tasks it is essential that you regularly attend classes.  

Course content

• Term 1 will begin the year with a thorough revision of the practical use of drama techniques - voice, body, movement and space. We will  explore how they can be combined to create strong, credible, three dimensional characters, existing in a variety of situations. 
• Term 2 will build on the techniques work of term 1 as we focus on the conventions and elements of devised drama. After a series of workshops, you will work collaboratively in groups to devise your own dramatic performance pieces.
• In term 3 we will turn our attention back to scripted performance. Using the script Almost, Maine, you will select a scene to perform with a partner.
• Term 4 will be devoted to the external exam preparation and derived grade exams. 

Assessment statement

• This course offers 3 internally assessed standards as well as 1 optional external exam for a total of 18 credits at both Levels 2 and 3.
• Every assessment in this subject area is a performance, which will be recorded for moderation purposes. The performance is supported with a portfolio of rehearsal evidence.
• There are no reassessment opportunities in this subject.

Authenticity

•  Authenticity of student evidence will be in line with school policy.  As the work is carried out over several weeks there will be a combination of teacher observations and the use of Google docs. Clear deadlines will be set at the commencement of each unit of work.

Appeal Procedures

• Students have the right to appeal the mark they have been awarded. If a student wishes to appeal a grade, they should initially talk to the subject learning advisor about the marking process immediately after the marked assessment task is shown to them. If still dissatisfied the student should make an appointment and discuss grades with the Principal’s Nominee who will check that the correct procedures have been followed as outlined in the school and subject policies taking into account any special circumstances.
