Hapori

A Hapori course is a non-curricular focused learning experience driven by student passion. Rooted in the concept of "hapori" or community, these courses empower students to explore diverse topics outside the traditional curriculum, fostering collaboration and a sense of ownership over their learning. With a focus on self-directed exploration, Hapori courses encourage students to pursue their interests, ranging from creative arts to technology and social issues. This initiative reflects our commitment to cultivating well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also deeply connected to their passions and the broader community.

Description

WHAKAPUĀWAI is a Hapori focusing on a holistic understanding of wellbeing and embracing challenge. We’ll explore activities that connect to all aspects of Hauora and the five ways to wellbeing. You are expected to try everything, including the physical fitness elements, but don’t worry we’ll accommodate all abilities.

The course will begin with a short bit of theory on what contributes to our wellbeing and helps us achieve our goals. Then, we’ll actively engage in a wide range of activities from some of the ideas below. We will make a final decision when we get together.

  • Taha Tinana – Physical wellbeing: circuit class, cricket, fitness, tennis, spin, running, walking, mountain biking, Zumba, better sleep, and more.
  • Taha Wairua – Spiritual wellbeing: gratitude exercises, mindfulness, walking on the Port Hills, yoga, and more.
  • Taha Hinengaro – Mental wellbeing: relaxation, board games, communication skills, mental puzzles, Whai (string games), and more.
  • Taha Whānau – Social wellbeing: volunteering, adventure-based learning, cooking, and more.

In this course, ākonga are expected to try all activities and will be encouraged to lead or teach an activity (don’t worry, it’s not compulsory). Remember, life begins at the end of our comfort zone, so come along and have some fun while working on your wellbeing.
