Description

In 8Chemistry this term we will spend time learning the foundations of organic chemistry by looking at a range of functional groups that are used to differentiate a range of organic molecules and then apply this in context by looking at Spectroscopy

Nearly all chemists use spectroscopic analysis every day to analyse the make up of different compounds. We will learn about three very popular spectroscopic techniques: Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy, NMR Spectroscopy, and Mass Spectroscopy. Then we will "decipher" mystery chemical structures using only spectroscopic information.

Secondly, we will wrap up the term looking at Ocean Acidification where we will build upon equilibrium principles and concepts about Acids/Bases from Level 2 to construct a report discussing the chemistry concepts and the implications these have on the marine ecosystem.

There are two assessment opportunities:

AS91338 Spectroscopy - Internal worth 3 credits

AS91389 Chemical Processes - Internal worth 3 credits
