Description

This program aims to be a comprehensive outdoor exploration designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to thrive in nature. Below are ideas around where I would like to see this go for the year.  Student voice will be very important in this process and guide us towards what we encounter.  The main focus will be to explore the hills, bush, or coastlines that make Aotearoa New Zealand an amazing location to grow up in.

Overnight Tramps: The goal will be to have at least two overnight tramps per term. In the bush, into the hills and tussuck lands, along river and lake sides.   At the end of the year, I would like us to explore the option of a week-long tramping trip.

Learning by Doing: Master essential skills like fire-making, equipment use, plant and animal identification, trap construction, and tracking. You'll also delve into the history of local Maori and colonizers, geological formations, and weather patterns. Learn to navigate with maps, GPS, and by following animal tracks.

Adventure Awaits: The program doesn't just teach you skills, it immerses you in thrilling activities. Explore scenic trails, embark on multi-day tramps, participate in beach clean-ups, and delve into cave streams. Challenge yourself with mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, abseiling, and even archery.

Shelter and Survival: Build basic shelters for various environments and gain first-aid knowledge for emergencies. Explore bushcraft techniques like foraging for edible plants, preparing outdoor meals, and navigating rivers safely.

Climate Action and Community: Become a leader in sustainability. Explore homesteading practices that integrate environmental awareness with technology. Gain insights into local ecosystems and renewable energy sources. Build connections within the community and participate in leadership opportunities surrounding climate action.

Earn Credits and Explore Further: This program offers opportunities to earn credits toward the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award and William Pike Challenge.

Beyond Limits: Push your boundaries with shooting sports, skiing, trail running, rock climbing, and orienteering. Participate in solo experiences to test your independence and confidence. Tackle adventure rope courses, peak climbing expeditions, and camp at Quail Island. These are examples of what could happen in this course.

Creative Expression: Document your adventures with journals, photography, and video production. Learn to edit and share your experiences with the world, or even turn them into creative projects.

Organizations and Resources: Learn about organizations like Tourism New Zealand, Department of Conservation, Forest and Bird, FMC (Federated Mountain Clubs), Te Araroa Trail, Adopt a Hut programs, Hut Bagging and Outdoor Access. Discover opportunities to volunteer in the red zone and give back to your community.

This program offers a holistic and exciting journey into the world of outdoor exploration. It equips you with valuable survival skills, fosters a connection with nature, and encourages you to become a responsible and active member of the environmental community.
