Hapori
A Hapori course is a non-curricular focused learning experience driven by student passion. Rooted in the concept of "hapori" or community, these courses empower students to explore diverse topics outside the traditional curriculum, fostering collaboration and a sense of ownership over their learning. With a focus on self-directed exploration, Hapori courses encourage students to pursue their interests, ranging from creative arts to technology and social issues. This initiative reflects our commitment to cultivating well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also deeply connected to their passions and the broader community.
Digital Media Projects is a guided self-directed class co-taught by Richard and Beth, your friendly neighbourhood digital art and media LAs! This course is created specifically for students to focus on the independent or collaborative creation of digital media projects. Students will be most successful in this class if they come with a plan (or a few ideas for a plan, and Beth and Richard can help you get started!).
As this is a Hapori course, NCEA assessments won't be assigned in this class. However, if you've had an NCEA project assigned by another LA in another course (which fits this flavour of digital media), you're welcome to work on this here, and get occasional feedback from us!
Though the classes will mainly involve students working on their individual projects, we'll be available for feedback, advice, and assistance with progressing through a goal, and we'll help you find the best tools to succeed with your chosen project.
Some ideas that we suggest that we think would be awesome are:
- Designing and making a short GRAPHIC NOVEL (maybe based on a short story or something)
- Planning and making a FILM (or an animation)
- Designing some materials (Maps? Models? Art?) for D&D (or any other role playing game)
- Making a concept for a BRAND (design folio sort of stuff)
- Designing and making MODELS (perhaps based on characters, physically or digitally.. or both!)
While the projects above would be very ideal for this class, some other possible uses for this class may be:
- developing a collection/portfolio of your own art (for a website? a business?)
- improving an art skill you already have (undergoing a multi-week, guided drawing course to improve your drawing?, learning some digital design software like Photoshop or Illustrator?)
- learning something new? (photography and editing? anatomy drawing? digital design?)
This class will be mainly self-directed, and students that are able to manage themselves within this type of environment will thrive. There will be strict rules around device use, keeping track of your progress (and process!) and participating in class-based Celebrations of Learning! If this sounds like you, come and start honing your art skills! :)
