Course Duration: 2 lessons per week - No Friday Purple Block Class

Course Description:
Immerse yourself in the art of pottery and ceramics in this engaging course for students aged 11 to 15! Designed for beginners and budding artists, this class focuses on the foundational skills of hand-building with clay. Students will learn techniques to shape and construct unique pieces and explore the exciting process of glazing and firing to create functional and decorative works of art.

Through hands-on projects, participants will gain confidence in working with clay, discover the magic of turning raw materials into finished ceramics, and experience the joy of creative expression.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Master Hand-Building Techniques
    • Learn essential methods such as coiling, slab-building, and pinching to shape and construct clay pieces.
    • Practice joining and smoothing techniques to create sturdy, polished forms.
  2. Understand the Ceramic Process
    • Explore the properties of clay and its transformation through drying and firing.
    • Gain an understanding of bisque firing, glazing, and final firing stages.
  3. Experiment with Decorative Techniques
    • Discover how to texture, carve, and embellish clay for artistic effects.
    • Learn glazing basics, including color application, layering, and creating various finishes.
  4. Create Unique Ceramic Projects
    • Design and craft pieces such as bowls, tiles, or small sculptures using hand-building methods.
    • Complete and display glazed and fired projects as finished works of art.
  5. Develop Studio Skills and Appreciation
    • Understand studio safety, proper use of tools, and care for materials.
    • Explore the cultural and historical significance of pottery and ceramics.
