Description

You must be 16 years or older to take this class. This unit builds on Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic short stories, exploring modern Gothic fiction and horror. Students will analyse texts such as The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Bird Box by Josh Malerman, and films like Hereditary (2018), The Witch (2015), and It Follows (2014). The course will focus on narrative techniques, symbolism, and character development to create tension and fear. Short films like Lights Out (2013) and The Smiling Man (2015) will also be examined for their modern take on horror. Students will have the opportunity to work on a variety of assessment tasks, with options available at both NCEA Level 2 and 3. By the end of the unit, students will deepen their understanding of contemporary Gothic and horror, while strengthening their critical thinking and writing skills.
