Description

This course is for students who enjoy reading short stories and want to explore different ideas, themes, and cultures through fiction. You will read a range of short stories, including ‘2BR02B’ by Kurt Vonnegut, ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ by Roald Dahl, ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson, and ‘Tangi’ by Witi Ihimaera. Throughout the course, you will analyze how the authors use characters, settings, and events to create meaning and tell their stories.

All students will be expected to read the stories, engage in class discussions, and complete tasks that help you understand the texts better. You will also explore stories from different cultures, such as ‘All Who Live on Islands’ by Rose Lu and ‘Pounamu Pounmau’ by Witi Ihimaera, and think about how these stories reflect important ideas and issues. This is a hands-on course where you will work with others, write about the stories, and share your ideas.

By the end of the course, you will have a greater appreciation for short stories and how they help us think about the world around us.
