Description

This class is a continuation of previous terms.  All those who have been involved are welcome to be part of this course for the whole year. Those already involved have increasingly good fitness.  Personal equipment is needed.  Some parental help is needed to make this programme work, like transport and hiking with the group.

This program aims to provide outdoor experiences designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to thrive in nature.  The main focus will be to explore the hills, bush, or coastlines that make Aotearoa New Zealand an amazing location to grow up in.

Overnight Tramps: We have multiple overnight tramps per term to huts or tents. These are in the bush, into the hills and tussuck lands, along river and lake sides.   At the end of the year, the goal is for a multi-day tramping trip.

Day Walks and Summits: Multiple times per term, we venture out to summit our local hills/mountains. This is all part of the training for our multi-day walks.

Urban Exploring: Christchurch has an array of adventures to have via our bus network. We explore our rivers, the Port Hills, and local bushes and coastlines, along with developing a greater understanding of the local history.

William Pike Challenge: This year, we are taking part in the William Pike Challenge, which covers aspects of outdoor pursuits, passion projects, and community service.

Learning by Doing: Master essential skills like fire-making, equipment use, plant and animal identification, trap construction, and tracking. You'll also delve into the history of local Maori and colonisers, geological formations, and weather patterns. Learn to navigate with maps, GPS, and by following animal tracks.

Predator Control: One of New Zealand’s lofty goals is to be predator-free by 2050.  We can be part of that.  Let’s make traps, develop trap lines and do our part to save our birds.

This program offers a holistic and exciting journey into the world of outdoor exploration. It equips you with valuable survival skills, fosters a connection with nature, and encourages you to become a responsible and active member of the environmental community.

If you sign up for this class or want to know more, I will provide a newsletter that provides all the information.
