Description

This class is for two sessions only. The Friday purple block class is an Arotahi block, there will be no access to the art room or clay resources in this block.

Get creative with clay in this hands-on class designed for Year 7 - 13s. You’ll learn a variety of hand-building techniques to craft your own candle holders, incense trays, jewellery vessels, and fun clay bunting and decorations. We will also be making a collaborative piece for the art room, which you will contribute to as your first piece of work.

From shaping and sculpting to adding texture and glazing, you’ll explore how to turn simple clay into beautiful, functional art. We will be exploring some new techniques with clay so if you have done a clay class before, there will be new learning in Term 3. Toward the end of the term you will also have the opportunity to negotiate making a clay piece/s of your own choice.

Term 3 Learning Objectives:

Students will create at least four functional or decorative clay objects (e.g., candle holder, incense tray, jewellery vessel, bunting/decorations) using hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab work.
Students will demonstrate the ability to apply surface decoration by using at least two different techniques, such as stamping, carving, or adding texture to their clay pieces.
Students will successfully apply glaze or underglaze to at least three finished pieces, showing control and understanding of colour application and the firing process.
Students will reflect on their creative process and outcomes by completing a short written or verbal self-assessment identifying challenges, successes, and new skills learned.
