Description

In this course we will delve into human interactions with nature within a New Zealand context.

We will learn about and investigate a variety of environmental and social issues:

  • The history of gold and coal mining and the positive and negative implications of future mining.
  • The impending Alpine Fault earthquake, the faults history and what a quake would mean for the West Coast.
  • The Whakaari White Island eruption, whether tourism should have been allowed on the island and how we can prevent future similar events.

The end of the course will allow you time to investigate your own people vs nature issue and create a presentation of your research. In Term 4 this course will continue and you will be able to use your research from this term to inform an action project.
