This course is a project based course where we will explore all things taiao (Environment).
For term one it is all about Tōmene (Exploring).
We will start by discovering the basics of plants, how they grow, how to propagate them, and the roles of different plants within the environment and ecosystems.
We will then, through a Mātauranga Māori (Māori traditional knowledge) lens, explore native plants, their uses, and how Māori view te taiao (The Environment). We will also explore kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and tikanga of certain plants and practices such as Harakeke Weaving.
We will be doing several trips offsite including visiting the Kahu Collective to learn about Harakeke Weaving, visiting Oderings to learn about Plant Propagation, and visiting the climate action campus.
I do suggest that you plan to do the course for the whole year as the work in term 1 will be helpful heading into the landscape design context for term two and three. Please see the course overview to get an idea of the full year plan.
There will be a mix of Level 2 and 3 standards available, not all standards are set in concrete yet as we will look to co-construct as a class what standards we would like to work towards. There is the opportunity to do a mix of Achievement standards and Unit standards, as well as cross-curriculum areas: Agriculture and Horticulture, Biology, possibly Technology, Design and Visual Communication, and Visual Art.
Below are the list of Standards that I am currently thinking we would start on in Term 1 (and likely carry on into Term 2), however there will be scope for co-construction as a class.
