Description

What is sustainability?  Kaitiakitanga? An ecosystem? How does economics work? This term, we begin by understanding how a sustainable future considers and depends on four aspects: environmental, economic, social and cultural. To put this understanding into practice, we'll choose a local ecosystem to study (e.g., river, beach, forest, estuary, rocky shore, park, built environment...); identify the plants and animals present;  investigate the human impact on the ecosystem (e.g., farming, recreation, tourism, restoration of habitat, pest control....) and decide how best look after that environment in the future. A one day fun field trip is part of this course.

Level One: Two geography assessments are on offer. Do one or both.

1) Sustainable use of an Environment

2) Geographic Research (You must undertake the field trip to sit this assessment)

Level Two and Three Students: You can either join the level one students in their choice of environment to study and field trip, or I can support you to choose one of your own and an ncea standard to match.
