Description

Nasal vaccines, transparent TVs, water filters, Yonder pouches, lab grown fabrics...? Innovation is creativity with a job to do (John Emmerling).  In this five week course, you will use design thinking to respond to an innovation challenge that you will be given.   The challenge could be building better bus stops, keeping cows cool, reducing water use, dealing with litter pollution, pollinating plants...

Working in groups, you'll discover your inner entrepreneur by creating possible solutions to meet real needs with innovative ideas.

Unlike previous science courses with Kate, there will be more emphasis on skills and project work than learning content.  Expect to:

  • think for yourselves,
  • meet deadlines,
  • relate to others, and
  • engage with your local community.

Here is a rough plan for the five weeks.

  1. Define innovation. Get into groups.
  2. Explore and research the challenge.
  3. Ideate (come up with solutions).
  4. Create a prototype.
  5. Present your ideas and reflect.
