Research, Insight, and Writing Consolidation
What this term is about
Term 3 focuses on research, synthesis, and consolidation. This is the point in the year where you step back from individual texts and begin to investigate ideas, language, or literature more independently, drawing together reading, viewing, and thinking from across the course.
This term is also where writing is refined and finalised. Rather than producing large amounts of new work, the emphasis is on selecting, shaping, and polishing your strongest writing from earlier in the year.
How learning works
Learning this term is centred on:
- research and information literacy skills
- evaluating sources and forming developed conclusions
- synthesising ideas across texts and contexts
- editing, refining, and polishing written work
- individual conferencing and targeted feedback
You will have significant agency this term. Research topics, texts, and lines of inquiry are chosen in conversation with the learning advisor and should reflect your interests, goals, and future pathways.
Anchor focus (research-based)
There is no single shared class text this term. Instead, students will work with a curated set of critical texts, articles, and sources related to their chosen area of inquiry. These may include:
- literary criticism
- thematic or contextual research
- language-based investigations
- director, author, or genre studies
This structure supports independence while still providing guidance and academic rigour.

How this term supports the year
Term 3 is the consolidation point of the course. Research work deepens understanding, while writing portfolio submission allows students to demonstrate growth, control, and coherence. The work completed this term also supports preparation for any external assessments students choose to sit later in the year.
