Description

The RAD programme is a hands-on technology and community service course where students learn to diagnose, repair, and refurbish laptops that are then gifted to people and organisations in need.

Working as part of a RAD Club, students develop practical digital technology skills while contributing to a real-world sustainability and digital equity kaupapa. The programme emphasises learning by doing, collaboration, and responsibility rather than formal assessment.

Students will:

  • Identify and troubleshoot common hardware and software issues
  • Safely disassemble, repair, and reassemble laptops
  • Replace components and restore devices to working order
  • Follow ethical and sustainable practices in managing e-waste
  • Work collaboratively in a technical, problem-solving environment
  • Contribute meaningfully to community-focused outcomes

A core feature of RAD is paying it forward. Approximately half of the refurbished devices are gifted within the local community, with the remaining devices distributed to other communities around Aotearoa through the RAD network.

Alongside technical skills, students gain experience that may be valuable for:

  • CVs and portfolios
  • Scholarship, university, and accommodation applications
  • Demonstrating community service, leadership, and initiative
  • Developing practical examples to discuss in interviews or references

RAD runs as a 1-hour session during Homebase time, so it does not conflict with regular timetabled classes.

This programme is well suited to students who enjoy hands-on learning, problem-solving, technology, and contributing to something with visible, real-world impact.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Recycle A Device, a national initiative supporting digital equity, sustainability, and community access to technology across Aotearoa.
