This course is mixed level as students can combine Achievement Standards from different levels. The aim is to provide a wider knowledge and skills base that will support higher achievement, whilst also streamlining and managing student workload.

Students will develop creative skills in visual communication, drawing and design. They will generate their own designs and solutions through research, freehand sketching, design notation and a range of computer applications and 3D CAD software.

Level 6/7 students are encouraged to work on two projects during the course of the year - currently Product Design and Architecture. Level 8 students need only focus on one. The standards offered consist of a blend of recommended and negotiated Achievement Standards. This allows students more scope to pursue areas of interest. This is appealing to students who are able to self-manage, have a reasonable level of literacy and are motivated by project work and personalized learning.

The Standards undertaken are negotiated between teacher and student. This allows students to undertake learning that reflects their personal interest and talents.

There are no formal exams for this subject as the work that students complete during the year (both in class and at home) is used as evidence for assessment. Projects that are externally assessed are submitted prior to exams and are sent away to NZQA for external marking.

For each assessment formative assessment will be conducted and you will get feedback and an indication of your likely grades before the final assessment. You may negotiate with your teacher to do more, fewer or different Achievement Standards. Below is the range of standards that can be undertaken.

Authenticity

  • Assignments that take place over time will be produced in an online system such as Google Docs. Learning Advisors will monitor student work by accessing document history. A portion of work will need to be completed during class time under Learning Advisor supervision.
  • Class tests will take place under supervised test conditions within class.
  • Students may be required to sign an authenticity statement, perform certain parts of assessment tasks under close supervision, or show through interview and the existence of notes and supporting material that the work submitted by the student is genuinely his/her own work.

Appeal Procedures

  • Students have the right to appeal the mark they have been awarded. If a student wishes to appeal a grade, they should initially talk to the subject learning advisor about the marking process immediately after the marked assessment task is shown to them. If still dissatisfied the student should make an appointment and discuss grades with the Principal’s Nominee who will check that the correct procedures have been followed as outlined in the school and subject policies taking into account any special circumstances.
