This course is for students who still need to achieve the NCEA Literacy Writing co-requisite, or who want focused support to improve their chances in the next assessment opportunity.
In Term 3, the course will continue to support Year 12 and 13 students who have not yet achieved the writing co-requisite. It is also open to Year 11 students who are ready to work towards the co-requisite.
The course focuses on developing the core writing skills needed to communicate ideas clearly. It is not a creative writing course or an extended essay course. Instead, students will practise the kinds of writing skills needed to explain ideas clearly, organise information, and make writing easy for a reader to follow.
Teaching is closely aligned with the four key areas assessed in the writing co-requisite:
- Sentence control: writing clear, complete sentences with correct grammar and punctuation
- Paragraph structure: organising ideas into coherent, developed paragraphs
- Developing and connecting ideas: staying on topic and making meaning clear for the reader
- Checking and editing: reviewing writing to improve clarity, accuracy, and overall sense
Writing will be taught explicitly and practised through short, manageable tasks. Students will receive regular feedback and have opportunities to revise and improve their work.
This course is designed for students who have good ideas but find it difficult to express them clearly in writing, or who have found previous assessment attempts challenging. It may also suit students who are close to achieving the co-requisite but need more confidence, accuracy, or consistency before their next attempt.
The aim is to help students achieve the literacy writing requirement while building writing skills that support other subjects and future pathways.
The course runs for two classes per week during Homebase time, rather than replacing a regular subject. It will run Tuesday and Wednesday during Homebase. Add the code WRI to line 4 in KAMAR.
