BUSINESS STUDIES (Money in, Tax Out)

Starting your first part-time job is an exciting milestone, but seeing tax deductions on your pay slip can raise a few questions! 

This course will help you to understand how taxes work in New Zealand by following Manaaki's journey.

In this journey you will come to understand:

• What tax is and why we pay it to fund shared public services like schools, healthcare, roads, and parks.
• How income tax works and how the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system automatically deducts tax from your paycheck.
• What GST is, how it is collected, and how it differs from income tax.
• What steps you need to take as a new worker (like getting an IRD number and filling out a tax code declaration) and why following the rules matters.
• Tax on savings and investments (if time allows).
