Floor 4 are off to Westport for camp in week 6, so what better time to delve into some of the West Coast’s wild and wonderful history.
In this course we will look at the geography and geology that makes the West Coast a literal gold mine. We’ll step back in time to the gold rush and the history of coal mining, and also discover what came before this - why weren’t Māori mining these?
We’ll take a personal look into the stories of some of these miners, their families, the highs and the lows. Where did they come from? Who became rich and who went bust?
Lastly we will put ourselves in the shoes of the decision makers and try to answer the big question.. should mining continue in New Zealand? What about the economy? What about conservation? What about jobs on the coast?
Whatever your stance, we want to hear your thoughts.
