LEVEL ONE (Your wellbeing and Earth's)
Ready for action? You understand ecosystems, and the connection between our values and our behaviour in terms of a sustainable future. Before going any further, let's check in with your own well-being. This term, we start by exploring possible self- improvement for a short period to see if it is a permanent change you would like to embrace. You could consider ‘no to low’ rubbish living, biking to school, getting fit, going vegetarian, composting, or buying ethical food. Using the “Te Whare Tapa Whā” and SMART goals models, you will learn the skills to set and achieve a goal successfully.
You’ve changed something for you. Next, you get to change the world. For the rest of Term 3 and the start of Term 4, you’ll choose and research a sustainability issue of concern (waste, food poverty, loss of culture, transport, food, carbon emissions, pest control, habitat loss, fast fashion….), and take action. You are encouraged to work with others on your action. There are four stages to your action:
1) Research your issue
2) Make a plan
3) Carry out your action
4) Reflect and report back on your action
LEVEL TWO (Sustainability actions: yours and other people's)
1) Action Project. See level one above...but bigger, and being able to measure if you have made a difference.
2) Sustainability Initiatives Exam: We dive into some sustainability initiatives here and overseas to prepare for the external exam. Think: Fair Trade, Sustainable Transport, Pest Control...
LEVEL THREE (Sustainability actions, policies and strategies)
1) Undertake a sustainability action project (as for level two but bigger).
2) Develop a sustainability strategy for an organisation.
3) Complete an external report comparing sustainability policies or ideologies. Due at the end of October.
Please note that Kate is away for the first two weeks of term. She will leave lots of work for you to do with a reliever.
New students? Tricky, but possible if you have a good background in a social studies subject, and are prepared to do some homework. Talk to Kate first.
