Welcome to Term 3 of our exciting cafe and hospitality class! Are you ready to dive into the world of running a cafe and explore the art of making coffee and delicious cabinet food? I'm thrilled to share my 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, with 9 of those years dedicated to working in cafes in various roles such as front of house, barista, head chef, and even as a cafe owner for 3 years.
Throughout the term, we will explore all aspects of cafe operations, from working in front of house to understanding the behind-the-scenes intricacies of day-to-day cafe life. You will gain valuable insights into customer service, menu planning, ingredient selection, food presentation, and much more.
With a hands-on approach and practical exercises, you will have the chance to apply your newly acquired skills in a simulated cafe environment. Whether you aspire to become a barista, chef, or cafe manager, this class will equip you with the knowledge and expertise to excel in the vibrant world of hospitality.
Learning Objectives
Ākonga will be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work as a barista, including how to make a variety of espresso-based drinks such as coffee, flat white, long black, and cappuccino.
Ākonga will be able to prepare and present a range of delicious cabinet-style food, including sandwiches, salads, cakes, and other baked goods, using appropriate techniques and ingredients.
Ākonga will be able to apply their understanding of front-of-house service and customer relations to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for cafe customers, including taking orders, handling payments, and responding to customer queries and complaints.
Ākonga will be able to understand the practicalities of running a cafe business, including budgeting, staffing, inventory management, and marketing, and apply this knowledge to develop a plan for their own hypothetical cafe.
