Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Mathematics at level 2 NCEA.
Please read the Course Overview.
In term two we will finish Tūponotanga | Probability Concepts (external, 4 credits), do a statistics internal Hīkaro | Statistical inference (~5 weeks) and start on Pāngarau | Algebra (external, 4 credits).
In Hīkaro | Statistical inference (Use statistical methods to make an inference) we look how to analyse data between two groups. The assessment for this is in a report form and is very similar to many of the Level 3 Statistics Internals.
Using the statistical enquiry cycle to make an inference involves:
- posing an appropriate investigative comparison question from a given set of population data
- selecting random samples
- selecting and using appropriate displays and measures
- discussing sample distributions
- discussing sampling variability, including the variability of estimates
- making an inference
- communicating findings in a conclusion.
Pāngarau | Algebra will extend students knowledge covered in level 1 NCEA.
https://algebrarules.com/ is a great reference to remind yourself of the basics.
Methods covered include:
- manipulating algebraic expressions, including rational expressions
- manipulating expressions with exponents, including fractional and negative exponents
- determining the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation
- solving exponential equations (which may include manipulating logarithms)
- forming and solving linear and quadratic equations.
