Description

We will spend the term building upon the Organic Chemistry covering in NCEA Level 2 Chemistry.

Firstly we will be looking at Spectroscopy. Nearly all chemists use spectroscopic analysis every day to analyse the make up of different compounds. We will learn about three very popular spectroscopic techniques: Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy, NMR Spectroscopy, and Mass Spectroscopy. Then we will "decipher" mystery chemical structures using only spectroscopic information. We will also expand upon the number of functional groups learned at NCEA Level 2.

There will be an internal assessment opportunity (AS91388 - 3 Credits).

Secondly, we will focus on Organic Chemistry, the first of our three externals. We will expand upon knowledge of organic chemistry from Level 2 to include functional groups such as aldehydes, ketones, esters, amides, and acyl chlorides.

There will be an external assessment opportunity (AS91391 - 5 Credits)
