Document outlining 2024 Mathematics plan.

Description

This course is restricted to senior students Year 11 - 13 who have not obtained 10 credits in Numeracy either via Achievement Standards or the new co-requisite assessment, which is mandatory to graduate any NCEA qualification.

The purpose of this course is to prepare students with the necessary skills and confidence to obtain Numeracy, and to understand and be able to use foundational mathematics in context which will support them for the rest of their lives.

Some students will be working towards sitting the first assessment opportunity at the end of May (Term 2). There will be an additional assessment opportunity in September (Term 3) for those who wish to spend more time preparing or are previously unsuccessful. Depending on where students are at, obtaining Numeracy may be a two year process.

The course will run as a mix of teacher-led instruction, group work, and self-directed learning. It is designed to help build confidence and understanding with essential concepts and problem solving, and will be taught in context as much as possible. We will be covering the following concepts/topics over Term 1 and Term 2:

  • Number
  • Measurement
  • Location and Navigation
  • Statistics and Data
  • Probability
  • Transformation
  • Geometry
  • Mathematical relationships

Please Note: The pathway on from this course would be into NCEA Level 1 mathematics after achieving the Numeracy co-requisite assessment. However, this is course is not set up to prepare students for formal mathematics, particularly as it does not include algebra, so does not lead onto Level 7 mathematics.
