Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Mathematics at level 2 NCEA.
Please read the COURSE OVERVIEW.
In term three we will finish Pāngarau | Algebra (external, 4 credits) and start Tuanaki | Calculus (external, 5 credits).
Pāngarau | Algebra will extend students knowledge covered in level 1 NCEA.
HTTPS://ALGEBRARULES.COM/ is a great reference to remind yourself of the basics.
Methods covered include:
- manipulating algebraic expressions, including rational expressions
- manipulating expressions with exponents, including fractional and negative exponents
- determining the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation
- solving exponential equations (which may include manipulating logarithms)
- forming and solving linear and quadratic equations.
Tuanaki | Calculus is a new topic for students that extends their algebra and graphing knowledge to allow them to relate both the gradients and areas to the curves of polynomial functions.
Methods covered include:
- derivatives and anti-derivatives of polynomials given in expanded form
- gradient functions
- gradient at a point
- equation of a tangent
- turning points where f(x) =0 and their nature
- function from a derived function
- rate of change problems (such as kinematics).
Some online learning will be available at Google Classroom Code: xdfd5at
You'll be expected to have a book for writing notes and working in, a clearfile to keep worksheets in, a pen and a scientific or graphics calculator that is compliant with NZQA's approved calculator list. Please beaware that the graphics calculator is highly adventageous. The Casio 9750 series is best and can be bought comparitively cheaply second hand on TradeMe.
