Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Mathematics – Level 2 NCEA
Please read the Course Overview.
In Term 2, we will:
✔ Finish Tūponotanga | Probability Concepts (External, 4 credits)
✔ Complete Hīkaro | Statistical Inference (Internal, ~5 weeks)
✔ Begin Pāngarau | Algebra (External, 4 credits)
📊 Hīkaro | Statistical Inference
(Use statistical methods to make an inference)
This unit focuses on analysing data between two groups, preparing you for both Level 2 and Level 3 Statistics. The assessment is in report form, similar to many Level 3 Statistics internals.
Using the statistical enquiry cycle, you'll learn how to:
✔ Pose an appropriate investigative comparison question
✔ Select random samples
✔ Choose and use appropriate displays and measures
✔ Discuss sample distributions
✔ Understand sampling variability and how estimates change
✔ Make an inference and communicate findings
Tip: Think of it like solving a mystery — using data to uncover patterns and draw conclusions!
🧮 Pāngarau | Algebra
(Extending Level 1 Algebra Skills)
Algebra builds the foundation for more advanced maths. If you need a refresher, AlgebraRules.com is a great resource!
Key topics include:
✔ Manipulating algebraic expressions, including fractions
✔ Working with exponents, including fractional and negative exponents
✔ Determining the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation
✔ Solving exponential equations, including logarithms
✔ Forming and solving linear and quadratic equations
Why does this matter? Algebra is used everywhere—from physics and engineering to finance and computer science. Mastering these skills opens doors to higher-level maths and real-world problem-solving!
Let’s make Term 2 a great learning experience!
