Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Mathematics at level 2 NCEA.
Please take a moment to read the Course Overview.
In term three, we'll wrap up our work on Pāngarau | Algebra and take on our new topic Tuanaki | Calculus. Both are external assessments and build on your existing knowledge while adding powerful new tools for problem solving.
Pāngarau | Algebra (External, 4 credits)
This topic continues from what you learned in Level 1 and deepens your understanding of algebraic methods. A great place to review the basics is https://algebrarules.com/.
You'll learn how to:
- Manipulate algebraic expressions, including rational expressions
- Manipulating expressions with exponents - positive, negative, and fractional
- Solve quadratic and exponential equations
- Determine the nature of the roots of a quadratic
- Form and solve linear and quadratic equations from real-life contexts
Tuanaki | Calculus (External, 5 credits)
Calculus builds on your algebra and graphing skills. You'll explore how curves behave by understanding their gradients and the areas underneath them.
You'll learn how to:
- Differentiate and integrate polynomial functions
- Find the gradient at any point on a curve
- Write the equation of a tangent line
- Identify and classify turning points
- Reconstruct functions from their derivatives
- Apply calculus to rate-of-change problems (e.g. motion)
