Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.

Description

Level 2 NCEA Mathematics.

This course builds on the mathematics you already know and extends it into more complex and useful situations. You will develop skills that are important for further study, everyday problem-solving, and understanding the world around you.

Please read the Course Overview.

Pākoki | Trigonometry (Internal, 3 Credits)

In Pākoki, you move beyond right-angled triangles and learn how to work with any triangle. You will develop new methods and apply them to a range of geometric problems, including:

  • Calculating arc length and sector area in circles
  • Using the sine rule and cosine rule to solve non-right-angled triangles
  • Finding the area of any triangle using appropriate formulas

This topic focuses on choosing and applying methods correctly, rather than memorising steps.

Tūponotanga | Probability Concepts (External, 4 Credits)

Tūponotanga extends your understanding of probability and uncertainty. You will learn how to analyse situations involving chance and interpret what the results mean in real contexts. Key ideas include:

  • Risk and relative risk
  • The normal distribution and how it is used
  • Experimental distributions and relative frequency
  • Representing probability using two-way tables and probability trees

Across the term, you will work with realistic contexts, explain your thinking clearly, and develop confidence in making and justifying predictions.

This course is about using mathematics to reason, model situations, and communicate ideas clearly.

Stationery and equipment

  • Maths workbook (1E5, 1E8, or 1J5)
  • Pens, pencils, eraser, ruler

Calculator

Having your own calculator is highly recommended. Becoming familiar with a calculator you own is a real advantage in assessments and exams.

  • Casio FX-8200 AU
A budget-friendly scientific calculator that covers everything you need up to and including Level 7.
  • Graphing calculator option
If you plan to continue on to Level 8 (Year 13) and university, consider a graphing calculator such as the Casio FX-9750 or a similar NZQA-approved model.
