Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.

Description

Level 1 NCEA Mathematics and Statistics

This term focuses on the NCEA Level 1 internal standard AS 91944, which is about exploring data using a statistical enquiry process. The course develops your ability to work with real data, recognise patterns and variation, and explain what the data shows using evidence.

Raraunga | Statistical Investigation
AS 91944 – Internal Assessment, 5 Credits

In this topic, you will complete a full statistical investigation, from posing a question to drawing and justifying conclusions using data. Your assessment will be presented as a written statistical report.

You will learn how to:

  • pose and refine a statistical question
  • explain different sources of variation in data
  • choose and use appropriate graphs and displays
  • describe key features of data such as spread, clusters, and outliers
  • use evidence from the data to justify conclusions
  • reflect on the investigation process and what the data does and does not show

The emphasis is on statistical thinking and explanation, not just producing graphs or calculations. You will be expected to explain your reasoning clearly and link conclusions back to the data.

Success in this course depends on regular attendance, active participation, and careful record-keeping. You should bring a maths exercise book, a pen, and a scientific calculator to every lesson.

Stationery and equipment

  • Maths workbook (1E5, 1E8, or 1J5)
  • Pens, pencils, eraser, ruler

Calculator

Having your own calculator is strongly recommended. Becoming familiar with a calculator you own is a real advantage for assessments.

  • Casio FX-8200 AU
A budget-friendly scientific calculator suitable up to and including Level 7.
  • Graphing calculator option
If you plan to continue to Level 8 (Year 13) and university, a graphing calculator such as the Casio FX-9750 or a similar NZQA-approved model is recommended.

A full list of NZQA-approved calculators is available on the NZQA website.
