Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Hardcore Maths is an extension option for students in Years 11 to 13 who want to strengthen their mathematical performance at the top end.
It runs for one hour per week during Homebase time, so it does not replace your regular maths classes.
Maybe you are inspired by the world of mathematics and want to explore ideas more deeply.
Or maybe you are looking to maximise results, boost your GPA, or strengthen applications for scholarships or overseas study.
Either way, this course is about doing hard maths.
A key feature of Hardcore Maths is that students help shape what we work on.
The focus is not fixed to a single syllabus. While I will bring problems, ideas, and structure, there will be significant opportunities for you to:
- suggest topics, questions, or areas you want to push further
- request support with particular externals or standards
- explore mathematical ideas that sit beyond the curriculum when there is interest
- decide which problems are worth spending serious time on
In Hardcore Maths, you will work on:
- high-difficulty and unfamiliar problems similar to the hardest Excellence questions
- strategies for approaching problems you have not seen before
- mathematical reasoning, structure, and justification
- methods and ideas that go beyond the standard curriculum but directly support success in externals
- analysing and refining solutions, not just getting answers
This is not a credit catch-up class.
You will not be spoon-fed methods.
You will be expected to think, struggle, and explain.
If you enjoy being challenged and want both depth and choice in what you learn, this course is likely a good fit.
