Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Mathematics at Level 2 NCEA
Please read the Course Overview.
In Term 2, we will:
- Finish Tūponotanga | Probability Concepts (External, 4 credits)
- Complete Hīkaro | Statistical Inference (Internal, ~5 weeks)
- Begin Pāngarau | Algebra (External, 4 credits)
Hīkaro | Statistical Inference (Use statistical methods to make an inference)
This unit focuses on analysing data from two groups and using statistical reasoning to make an inference about a wider population. The assessment is presented as a written statistical report.
Using the statistical enquiry cycle, students will learn how to:
- pose an appropriate investigative comparison question
- select random samples
- choose and use appropriate displays and measures
- describe and compare sample distributions
- understand sampling variability
- make an inference and clearly communicate conclusions
Pāngarau | Algebra (Extending Level 1 Algebra Skills)
Algebra develops the symbolic skills needed for higher-level mathematics and many STEM subjects.
Key topics include:
- manipulating algebraic expressions, including fractions
- working with exponents, including negative and fractional powers
- forming and solving linear and quadratic equations
- determining the nature of the roots of quadratic equations
- solving exponential equations, including logarithms
