Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.

Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.

Description

Hardcore Maths is an option for students in Years 11 to 13 who want to strengthen their mathematical performance.

In Term 3, Hardcore Maths has two purposes.

First, it remains an extension option for students who want to work at the top end: harder problems, deeper mathematical ideas, Excellence-level reasoning, and strategies for unfamiliar questions.

Second, it is also available to students who want targeted help with their maths, especially students who may miss some regular class time because of commitments such as Football Academy, Dance Academy, or other programmes.

It runs for one hour per week on Friday during Homebase time. It does not replace your regular maths classes.

Add the code HCMATH to line 6 in KAMAR.

A key feature of Hardcore Maths is that students help shape what we work on.

The focus is not fixed to a single syllabus. While I will bring problems, ideas, and structure, there will be opportunities for you to:

  • suggest topics, questions, or areas you want to push further
  • request support with particular externals, internals, or standards
  • explore mathematical ideas beyond the curriculum when there is interest
  • work through specific questions that are blocking your progress
  • analyse and improve solutions, not just get answers

There is one important condition:

If you are coming for help, you must send me a specific maths question before the class on Friday.

That might be:

  • a question from class that you could not finish
  • a practice exam question you got stuck on
  • a concept you need explained
  • a method you do not understand
  • a question connected to an internal or external standard

“Can I just get help with maths?” is too broad.

“Can we go over question 4 from the trigonometry worksheet?” is useful.

“Can you help me understand why my algebra answer is wrong here?” is useful.

“Can we look at this Excellence-style probability question?” is useful.

In Hardcore Maths, you may work on:

  • high-difficulty and unfamiliar problems similar to the hardest Excellence questions
  • strategies for approaching problems you have not seen before
  • mathematical reasoning, structure, and justification
  • methods and ideas that go beyond the standard curriculum but directly support success
  • targeted questions from your current maths learning
  • catching up on missed understanding, not just missed work

This is not a credit catch-up class.

It is not a place to arrive with no plan and ask to be taught “everything”.

You will not be spoon-fed methods.

You will be expected to think, struggle, ask good questions, and explain your reasoning.

If you enjoy being challenged, want to improve your maths, or need focused help with specific questions, Hardcore Maths may be a good fit.
