Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
Hardcore Maths is an option for students in Years 11 to 13 who want to strengthen their mathematical thinking and aim higher in their NCEA externals.
Throughout the year, we have explored powerful mathematical ideas, including number theory, patterns, problem-solving, and proof. This kind of thinking is excellent preparation for tackling unfamiliar problems and the more challenging Excellence-level questions in external assessments.
During Term 4.1, we will make the focus more concrete. Each session will explore a selection of Excellence-level problems from across NCEA Levels 1 to 3. We will look at how to get started, identify useful strategies, connect different areas of mathematics, and communicate reasoning clearly enough to earn Excellence.
Students are also welcome to suggest a topic or bring along a difficult problem they would like help investigating.
Hardcore Maths runs for one hour each Friday during Homebase time. It does not replace your regular mathematics classes.
