Course aims / learning outcomes
- This mathematics course will cater for those students who have a good grasp of mathematics at Level 5 and wish to continue their learning into Level 6. The course will also give students aiming to continue their mathematics into Level 7 a good foundation for their future studies. There is an opportunity for students to complete their Level 1 numeracy requirements through this course.
- During the first two terms we will be working through two internals based around statistics, number skills, measurement and trigonometry. In term 3 we will concentrate on the algebra and graphing required to complete the end of year external. Students who wish to continue with maths into next year should complete this external.
- There may also be an opportunity to complete some learning to prepare for a exam-based statistical standard.
Course content
There will be two classes in 2024, taught by Sam Buchanan and Michelle Verkaaik.
Depending on the needs of the students the topics could change after Term 1.
- Term 1
- Statistical investigation internal
- Start Number, Measurement, and Trigonometry
- Term 2
- Number, Measurement, Trigonometry Internal
- Term 3
- Algebra, Graphing
- Term 4
- Revision
Assessment statement
- There are potentially 20 Level 1 credits on offer in this course. A realistic workload for most students would be 15 credits.
- There are 2 internal assessments in this course that will be report based, and two external assessment that will take place during the end of year examinations.
Authenticity
- Assignments that take place over time will be produced in an online system such as Google Docs. Learning Advisors will monitor student work by accessing document history. A portion of work will need to be completed during class time under Learning Advisor supervision.
- Class tests will take place under supervised test conditions within class.
- Students may be required to sign an authenticity statement, perform certain parts of assessment tasks under close supervision, or show through interview and the existence of notes and supporting material that the work submitted by the student is genuinely his/her own work.
Appeal Procedures
- Students have the right to appeal the mark they have been awarded. If a student wishes to appeal a grade, they should initially talk to the subject learning advisor about the marking process immediately after the marked assessment task is shown to them. If still dissatisfied the student should make an appointment and discuss grades with the Principal’s Nominee who will check that the correct procedures have been followed as outlined in the school and subject policies taking into account any special circumstances.
