Course aims / learning outcomes

This class is primarily designed for students working on NCEA art portfolios and is based on an exploration of artist models and key themes and movements from Art History. You do not have to be a great artist to join this class, you just need to have an interest in art. Any student interested in exploring questions like “what makes a work of art great?”, “who are some of the most important artists throughout history?”, or “what is my personal response to a piece of art?” are encouraged to join. NCEA level 2 and 3 assessments can be negotiated for students working at that level of the curriculum. Possible topics to explore include the evolution of street art, architectural styles through history, The Great Works of art, specific art movements (like Art Nouveau, Modernism, Impressionism, Pop Art, etc) or specific artists. Topics covered will be negotiated once the class is formed.

Course content

Course content for this program will be determined in consultation with the class. Content and topics could include (as above) the evolution of street art, architectural styles through history, The Great Works of art, specific art movements or artists, etc.

Authenticity

  • Assignments that take place over time will be produced in an online system such as Google Docs. Learning Advisors will monitor student work by accessing document history. A portion of work will need to be completed during class time under Learning Advisor supervision.
  • Class tests will take place under supervised test conditions within class.
  • Students may be required to sign an authenticity statement, perform certain parts of assessment tasks under close supervision, or show through interview and the existence of notes and supporting material that the work submitted by the student is genuinely his/her own work.

Appeal Procedures

  • Students have the right to appeal the mark they have been awarded. If a student wishes to appeal a grade, they should initially talk to the subject learning advisor about the marking process immediately after the marked assessment task is shown to them. If still dissatisfied the student should make an appointment and discuss grades with the Principal’s Nominee who will check that the correct procedures have been followed as outlined in the school and subject policies taking into account any special circumstances.
