Mathematics & Statistics
Document outlining 2024/2025 Mathematics plan.
Note that levels 4 and 5 are intended to be two year programmes.
This term we will focus mainly on statistics, covering a unit of work based on the new Mathematics and Statistics Level 1 Achievement Standard 1.1 "Explore data using a statistical enquiry process." For those wishing to attempt it, this assessment is an internal worth 5 credits that is completed in the style of a report.
Students in this course will need a scientific calculator, and a sound understanding of the concepts from 5MAT.
It is suitable for all future pathways, as the content relates to both academic work and general critical and creative thinking.
This topic involves analysing both:
- bivariate data - two numerical variables such.as the relationship between heights and arm spans
- multivariate data - mixed categorical and numerical data such as how weights compare between different bird species.
This analysis is done within the data cycle, where we will look at:
- Planning an investigation for a purpose
- Presenting and unpacking data, such as with graphs
- Using the features of the data to make inferences and justify our conclusions
- Key concepts such as sampling and variability.
The course will finish with some Algebra fundamentals to support work for other topics later in the year.
